CCR's Office of Communications, located in the Office of the Director, Center for Cancer Research, communicates both inside the Center and outside to diverse audiences. Our goal is to communicate effectively the importance of CCR's ongoing basic, translational, and clinical research in CCR to the media, the general public, cancer patients and their physicians, other scientists, advocacy groups, and policy makers. Toward this goal, we partner with other Offices, Centers and Divisions within the National Cancer Institute (NCI), including the Media Relations Branch within the NCI Office of Communications, the Office of Science Planning and Assessment, the Office of Government and Congressional Relations, and others.
CCR's Office of Communications is responsible for:
- The CCR Web site
- CCR's Research Accomplishments
- CCR connections , CCR's bi-annual magazine.
- The 60-Second Update , a monthly, in-house e-mail.
- The Monthly Manuscript Report , an in-house report of CCR's accepted/in press scientific manuscripts.
- Our News, CCR's news web page.
- In the Journals
- Scientific Advances, a collection of CCR's most important accomplishments. Selected advances may be promoted in one or more of the following ways:
- development of an NCI press release
- inclusion in NCI's Budget Book
- inclusion in CCR’s Research Accomplishments
- publication in the NCI Cancer Bulletin
- publication in CCR connections - The Understanding Cancer series on cancer.gov
Clearance Procedures
The CCR Office of Communications is also responsible for ensuring that our scientists follow NIH/NCI clearance requirements and are confident and well informed when giving interviews to the media. The link listed below provides useful information in these two areas.

Media Training
The NCI Office of Communications offers several good resources to help NCI scientists be more comfortable when being interviewed by the media. Please read “ Hints for Talking with the Media”. We also encourage CCR scientists to attend the half-day Media Training Program that is sponsored by the NCI Office of Communications.
